What Hedge Reduction Involves
Reduction means cutting a hedge back significantly in height and width, beyond what a routine trim would achieve, to bring an overgrown hedge back into proportion. Depending on the species and how much needs to come off, this can sometimes be done in one visit, but for hedges that are very overgrown — or species that don't respond well to being cut back too hard in one go — we'll often recommend a staged approach across two seasons.
The goal throughout is a hedge that comes through the process healthy and thick, not a row of bare stumps that takes years to recover, or worse, never does.
Which Species Can Be Cut Back Hard?
Many common hedging species — beech, hawthorn, privet, hornbeam — tolerate a hard reduction reasonably well and will regenerate new growth from old wood. Conifers are a different story: most conifer species, including leylandii, will not regrow from bare, leafless wood, which means reduction has to be handled very differently and more conservatively — something we cover in detail in our separate guide to conifer reduction.
Knowing which category your hedge falls into before cutting is essential, since getting it wrong on a conifer hedge can leave permanent brown patches that never recover.
Staging a Reduction Over Time
For a significantly overgrown hedge, cutting all the way back to the target size in one visit can put too much stress on the plant and, for some species, risks the same bare-wood problem as conifers. A staged reduction — taking a portion off one season and the rest the next, giving the hedge time to recover and produce fresh growth in between — is often the safer route to a genuinely healthy result.
