What's involved in a width reduction
- Assessing how much healthy green growth is available on each side
- Cutting back to a sensible, even line rather than an arbitrary depth
- Considering whether both sides can be reduced at once or need staging
- Checking the species' tolerance for cutting into older wood
It's worth knowing that a hedge cut back hard on the sides can look a little uneven or sparse to begin with, particularly on the side facing the sun less. This usually fills back in with regrowth over the following season.
