The legal position

The Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 protects wild birds, their nests and eggs. Active nests must not simply be destroyed because a hedge happens to be due for a trim.

What this means in practice

Before carrying out substantial hedge cutting, we check for signs of active nesting. Light trimming that doesn't disturb an active nest may still be possible, but this needs a proper assessment rather than assumptions.
