When Should You Have a Tree Pruned in Derby?

The General Rule: Dormant Season

For most deciduous trees, late autumn through to late winter — once leaves have dropped and the tree has gone dormant — is the ideal pruning window. You can see the full branch structure clearly without leaf cover, and the tree isn't actively pushing energy into new growth, which means it responds well to having material removed.

Exceptions Worth Knowing

Not every tree fits the dormant-season rule. Cherry, plum and other members of the Prunus family are generally better pruned in summer, when the risk of silver leaf disease — which enters through wounds made during wetter, cooler months — is much lower. Birch and walnut can "bleed" heavily if pruned in late winter or early spring as sap starts rising, so late summer is often preferred instead.

Bird Nesting Season
