Why Grind a Stump Instead of Leaving It?
Left in the ground, most stumps don't simply rot away quietly — many species will keep sending up suckering regrowth from the roots for years, which means the tree effectively never actually goes away. Stumps are also a genuine trip hazard, particularly once they're partly hidden by grass, and they get in the way of any new planting, patio, decking or driveway work.
Grinding removes the visible stump and the bulk of the root plate close to the surface, clearing the way for whatever you want to do with that spot next.
How the Grinding Process Works
We use a specialist stump grinder — a machine with a rotating cutting wheel — to grind the stump down below ground level, typically 15–30cm deep depending on what you're planning for the space afterwards (deeper if you intend to replant close by). The machine works its way across and down through the stump and the main root flare, reducing solid wood to loose wood chip.
For stumps in tight or awkward spots, we also carry smaller access equipment, so a stump being in a narrow side passage or behind a fence doesn't rule grinding out.
What Happens to the Waste?
The wood chip produced by grinding is useful material, not rubbish — many customers keep it for mulch or paths, and we're always happy to leave it if you'd like it. If you'd rather it was cleared away entirely, we can remove it as part of the job, and the resulting hole is typically backfilled with the chippings or topsoil so the area is left level and ready to use.
