Why Stumps Don't Just Disappear on Their Own
Left untouched, a stump can take many years to rot down naturally, and in the meantime plenty of species will keep sending up suckering regrowth from the roots — meaning the tree, in effect, hasn't really gone anywhere. Stumps hidden by regrowing grass are also a genuine trip hazard, and they're an obstacle to any new planting, patio or driveway work planned for that spot.
The Grinding Process, Step by Step
We use a specialist stump grinder — a machine with a rotating cutting wheel — to grind the stump and its main root flare down below ground level, typically 15–30cm deep depending on what's planned for the area afterwards. The machine works methodically across and down through the stump, turning solid wood into loose wood chip in a fraction of the time manual digging would take.
For stumps in tight spots — behind a fence, down a narrow side passage — we also carry smaller access equipment, so difficult access rarely rules grinding out.
Where the Waste Goes
The chip produced by grinding isn't waste in the usual sense — it's genuinely useful as mulch or for paths, and plenty of Derby customers ask us to leave it for exactly that purpose. If you'd rather it was cleared away, we remove it as part of the job, and the hole left behind is typically backfilled with chippings or topsoil so the area's left level and ready to use.
