What a Reduction Actually Involves
Reduction means cutting a hedge back significantly in height and width — well beyond what a routine trim would achieve — to bring it back into proportion. Depending on the species and how much needs removing, this can sometimes be done in a single visit, though very overgrown hedges, or species that don't respond well to being cut back hard all at once, are often better handled in stages across two seasons.
Throughout, the goal is a hedge that comes out the other side healthy and thick, not a row of bare stumps that takes years to recover from, or never fully does.
Not Every Species Handles a Hard Cut the Same Way
Many common hedging species — beech, hawthorn, privet, hornbeam — tolerate a hard reduction reasonably well and regenerate new growth from old wood without much fuss. Conifers are the exception: most, including leylandii, will not regrow from bare, leafless wood, meaning their reduction has to be handled far more conservatively — a subject we cover in full in our dedicated conifer reduction guide.
Knowing which category your hedge falls into before any cutting starts is essential, since getting it wrong on a conifer hedge leaves permanent brown patches that simply don't come back.
Why Staging Sometimes Makes More Sense
Cutting a significantly overgrown hedge all the way back to its target size in one go can put too much stress on the plant, and for some species risks the same bare-wood problem as conifers. A staged reduction — taking a portion off in one season and the rest the following year, giving the hedge time to recover and put on fresh growth in between — is often the more reliable route to a genuinely healthy result.
