The Straightforward Explanation
Crown reduction reduces a tree's height and spread by cutting back the outer growth to suitable points within the crown — a lateral branch or bud capable of taking over as the new leading growth. This is fundamentally different from "topping," where a tree is hacked back hard to stubs with no regard for its natural structure — a practice that causes weak, poorly attached regrowth and long-term decline, and one we never carry out.
